    Epileptic fits and involuntary movements

    Seizures can be very frightening, but the most important thing is to stay calm. Most fits last less than 2 minutes and pass on their own. The goal is to keep the dog safe.

    Warning signs

    • Involuntary rhythmic muscle movements
    • Body rigidity
    • Temporary loss of consciousness
    • Excessive drooling
    • Disorientation, confusion or agitation after the fit

    What to do immediately

    1. 1Move hard or sharp objects away from the area around the dog
    2. 2Protect the head with something soft if it hits something
    3. 3Observe and time the duration of the fit
    4. 4Keep the environment quiet with low lighting
    5. 5After the fit, keep the dog calm and warm

    What NOT to do

    • Do not hold or block the tongue — you risk being bitten
    • Do not physically restrain the dog during the fit
    • Do not put anything in its mouth
    • Do not wake or stimulate abruptly in the post-fit phase

    Call the vet immediately if

    • The fit lasts more than 2–3 minutes
    • Multiple seizures in close succession on the same day
    • The dog does not recover within 30 minutes of the fit
    • First seizure — even if brief
