    Severe Diarrhoea

    Intense diarrhoea with or without blood

    Occasional diarrhoea can have trivial causes such as a diet change. When it is intense, frequent or accompanied by blood, it can lead to rapid dehydration, especially in puppies.

    Warning signs

    • Completely liquid and repeated stools
    • Presence of bright red or dark blood in stools
    • Lethargy and weakness
    • Loss of appetite
    • Tense or painful abdomen

    What to do immediately

    1. 1Ensure the dog stays hydrated: offer small amounts of water frequently
    2. 2After the rest period, try plain boiled white rice with no seasoning
    3. 3Observe the frequency and appearance of stools
    4. 4Check for other signs such as lethargy or associated vomiting

    What NOT to do

    • Do not give anti-diarrhoea medications without veterinary guidance
    • Do not ignore the presence of blood in stools
    • Do not leave the dog without water even if it refuses
    • Do not wait more than 24 hours if conditions do not improve

    Call the vet immediately if

    • Blood in stools
    • Diarrhoea lasting more than 24 hours
    • Marked lethargy or associated vomiting
    • Puppy, elderly dog, or dog with pre-existing conditions
