Warning signs
- Body very hot to the touch
- Sudden excessive drooling
- Very labored breathing
- Staggering or unsteady gait
- Bright red gums or, conversely, dry and pale gums
What to do immediately
- 1Move the dog immediately to a cool, shaded place
- 2Wet the body with cool (not cold) water
- 3Use a fan to circulate air if available
- 4Offer small amounts of fresh water
- 5Get to the veterinarian as quickly as possible
What NOT to do
- Do not use ice-cold water or direct ice
- Never leave the dog in a car, even for a few minutes
- Do not force the dog to drink large amounts of water at once
- Do not wait for the dog to recover on its own if the situation is serious
Call the vet immediately if
- Body temperature that does not drop after cooling
- Collapse or loss of consciousness
- Seizures
- Pale or bluish gums
