    To assess

    Persistent Vomiting

    Repeated vomiting episodes

A single vomiting episode is not always worrying. When vomiting recurs multiple times in a few hours or other signs appear, it is important to assess the situation carefully.

    Warning signs

    • Vomiting more than 3 times in a few hours
    • Presence of blood or bile in vomit
    • Lethargy and loss of interest
    • Swollen or tender abdomen to the touch
    • Complete refusal of water

    What to do immediately

    1. 1Remove food for 2–4 hours to let the stomach rest
    2. 2Offer small amounts of fresh water frequently
    3. 3Monitor the situation and note frequency and appearance of vomit
    4. 4Resume with light food (plain white rice) after rest if the dog improves

    What NOT to do

    • Do not give anti-vomiting medications without a veterinary prescription
    • Do not force the dog to eat if it does not want to
    • Do not ignore the presence of blood in vomit
    • Do not leave the dog without water for more than a few hours

    Call the vet immediately if

    • Vomiting with blood
    • Swollen or very tender abdomen
    • Continuous vomiting for more than 6 hours
    • Puppy or elderly dog with repeated vomiting
