Abdominal swelling in dogs can have different causes, some of which require urgent veterinary intervention. It should never be ignored, especially if it appears rapidly or is accompanied by other symptoms such as retching, agitation, or breathing difficulty.

Possible common causes
- •May be related to simple flatulence (gas after a large meal)
- •May result from fluid accumulation in the abdomen (various causes)
- •In some cases may be associated with gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), a serious emergency
- •May result from intestinal parasites, especially in puppies
- •In rare cases may be related to problems with internal organs
When to monitor at home
- Mild swelling after a large meal, the dog is calm and shows no discomfort
- It resolves within 1–2 hours
When to contact the vet
- The swelling is obvious and does not reduce
- The dog has repeated retching without being able to vomit
- It is agitated, cannot find a position, and walks strangely
- It is accompanied by weakness or breathing difficulty
When it may be an emergency
- Abdomen as tight as a drum with unproductive retching (possible GDV)
- Sudden collapse associated with swelling
- Rapid worsening within minutes
