When to monitor at home
- Mild limping after physical exertion that improves with rest
- The dog walks, eats, and behaves normally
- There is no swelling, tenderness, or visible wound

- The limping does not improve after 24 hours of rest
- The paw is swollen, warm, or the dog does not put weight on it
- There is a visible wound or foreign body
- The dog seems in pain when the paw or limb is touched
When it may be an emergency
- Severe trauma with rapid swelling or evident deformity
- Sudden inability to walk
- Paralysis or loss of sensation in one or more paws
