    Allergic Reaction

    Anaphylactic shock, sudden swelling

    Allergic reactions can be mild or very rapid and severe. Sudden swelling of the face or breathing difficulties are signs that require immediate intervention.

    Warning signs

    • Sudden swelling of the muzzle, lips, or neck
    • Visible hives (welts or patches on the skin)
    • Laboured or difficult breathing
    • Sudden vomiting associated with swelling
    • Lethargy or collapse

    What to do immediately

    1. 1Remove the dog from the allergen source if known
    2. 2Keep calm and monitor breathing
    3. 3Get to the veterinarian immediately if there is facial swelling or breathing difficulties
    4. 4Note what was eaten, touched, or inhaled in the preceding hours

    What NOT to do

    • Do not give antihistamines or cortisone without a veterinary prescription
    • Do not wait if there is breathing difficulty or facial swelling
    • Do not leave the dog alone during an ongoing reaction

    Call the vet immediately if

    • Rapid swelling of the face, muzzle, or neck
    • Associated breathing difficulties
    • Collapse or loss of consciousness
    • Pale or bluish gums
